Orchestra and Band High School Players

My town is certainly not the mecca for the arts when compared to the towns to the west that host the University of Illinois, but I am very heartened here in the "changing times" of 2008 to have just seen and heard that some of our local high schoolers still have the motivation to play an instrument and/or sing (well).

I feel I know a little about what's involved with learning a woodwind (or brass) instrument and even a piano and even singing. My life since the age of 10, that is, for almost 50 years, has contained some type of musical endeavor by me roughly 6/7 of the time--(but taking time out for meals, of course as Geo. Carlin used to say.)

While the young have their personal music that is so different from a standard band, orchestra or choir repertoire, again I am elated to see some of them not only make the hard investment of time, energy, money and frustration into instrumental and vocal musical expression, but to persevere for years to finally showcase it so nicely in their respective groups.

May kids still be playing a tuba or a triangle 100 yrs. from now!

Ignore, Make Light Or Sue?

There really is a such thing as libel, a written form of slander.

If a poster falsely says to the world "this real person, so-and-so, has been unfaithful in marriage", if that's not libel, I don't know what is.

ANY moderator should remove a libelous post and follow whatever consequences have been established for the offender.

Still, I would hope most normal, average people will simply see such posts for what they are: garbage from posters whose minds contain a lot of it.

As I said only a post-or-so ago, I'd make light of it. I remember hearing the advice to "ignore" AND also that "life is too short". Just dismiss those attempts of incitement as being from little bugs who scurry out of sight when they hear you coming or when the room lights go on.

Or perhaps with a tad more compassion: as coming from people who are truly under the influence of misery.

Ignore, Ignore, Ignore

Those were the 3 words Tuck offered in dealing with replies intended to be hurtful.

At this point, going on 4 years of posting, I feel I have been adequately vaccinated.

The bottom line, in my opinion, is that the uncalled-for responses are simply showing how miserable a poster's life is to him/her to an unknown degree that only a shrink might be able to determine.

We all have problems or we wouldn’t be humans. But to act like an oaf online only shows one’s lack of reasonable control. So, I’d suggest a 2-week vacation somewhere. A great get-away could do wonders. Say! Here’s a great suggestion for those afflicted souls: How about living it up at a Danville motel!?! Followed by a bicycle ride to, say, Kickapoo and back, what more could one want?

That, or a trip to the International House of Pancakes could do the trick! Regards,
